Ahead of the Bell: Apple iPod exec leaving
NEW YORK -- Tony Fadell, senior vice president of Apple Inc.'s iPod division, is reducing his role at the company and will serve as an adviser to Chief Executive Steve Jobs, the computer and gadget maker said Tuesday.

Filed under: Portable Audio, Portable Video He might not be a household name, but Tony Fadell is the chief of Apple's iPod division (and credited with bringing the iPod idea to Apple) and part of the executive team responsible for the iPhone's development. At least he was. The Wall Street Journal, citing sources "familiar with the matter," reports that Fadell is jumping off the Infinite Loop for personal reasons but will remain at Apple's disposal in a consulting role. Here's the kicker: Mark Papermaster appears to be the named successor assuming IBM's lawyers don't put a stop to Apple's plans. None of this matters of course since it's common knowledge amongst investors that Steve Jobs does everything from inventing the iPhone to replacing printer cartridges around the Apple campus -- his staff is just there for tax purposes.Update: It's official. Papermaster is in as senior VP of Devices Hardware Engineering reporting to Jobs -- Fadell is out. That means he'll lead the iPod and iPhone hardware engineering teams. IBM be damned.Read -- WSJ rumorRead -- Tony Fadell BioWSJ: Apple's iPod boss stepping down, replacement stuck in legal limbo (Update: now official) originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 04 Nov 2008 08:34:00 EST. Apple's Greg Joswiak touts iPod touch as the future of handheld gaming
Filed under: Gaming, Portable Audio, Portable Video We speculated in our review of the new iPod touch that Apple had designs on more than just consumption of music and video, and now an interview with company VP of iPod and iPhone product marketing Greg Joswiak all but confirms that sights are set on the gaming market. In a conversation with T3, Joswiak boasts that the devices are breaking through as a viable alternative to established handhelds (such as the PSP or DS) due mostly in part to competitive software pricing and the company's content delivery system. While much of the interview focuses on iPod sales figures, it does delve into more detailed comparisons of platforms, with Joswiak stating, "The 3D graphic power here [iPod touch] is significantly greater than what you have here [picks up Nintendo DS]. So this allows people to do significantly higher quality games." While it's not unusual to hear Apple's honchos hyping their products like they just skipped across some water to heal a few lepers, it is a new trend to see the company aggressively going after gaming platform mainstays so directly. With Sony and Nintendo just getting up to speed on non-traditional content delivery, Apple may find an edge come holiday season with casual gamers -- the real question is whether the hardcore will bite.[Via Eurogamer]Apple's Greg Joswiak touts iPod touch as the future of handheld gaming originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 12 Nov 2008 10:12:00 EST. Tablet iPod Rumored on Weak Evidence
John Markoff of the New York Times is reporting that a source from a search engine has shared log information showing hits from "an unannounced Apple product with a display somewhere between an iPhone and a MacBook." By itself, that might not have attracted much attention. But during a rare appearance on Apple's earnings call this week, Steve Jobs commented that Apple didn't "know how to build a sub-$500 computer that is not a piece of junk" and - far more positively - that Apple is watching the nascent market for netbooks (small, inexpensive, portable computers used primarily for Web and email access). Combine Jobs's comments with the search engine logs, and it's easy to imagine an iPhone- or iPod touch-like device with a larger screen. Just because Apple can't build a sub-$500 computer that's not junk doesn't mean they can't build a sub-$500 device based on the iPhone software. Sounds an awful like the device I suggested in "Open Letter to Steve Jobs: In Support of an iPod reader" (2008-03-05), doesn't it? However, much as I'd love to see an iPod reader and believe that it would be good business for Apple, I'm suspicious of the evidence as given. A quick scan through my Google Analytics shows a wide range of screen resolutions - 393 in the last month, including a few hits from devices that report pixel counts from 0 by 0 (clearly a audio-only Web browser) all the way up to 65536 by 65536 (must be a custom screen used on the sly by Bill Gates's Mac-using housekeeper). There are tons of hits from devices reporting resolutions between an iPhone and a MacBook. Our traffic is infinitesimal in comparison with that of a search engine, but I can't see how more data would do anything but further muddy the issue. There are two other things this anonymous search engine could do to glean more information about a particular screen resolution, which I can't do easily. First, they could limit the search to IP number ranges known to belong to Apple, and second, they could examine the user-agent string for anomalous resolutions. Although it's conceivable that Apple would allow prototype devices out on the Internet from within an Apple-controlled IP range, I can't imagine seeing a user-agent string along the lines of "Unannounced Apple Product." So, I have to say that I'm not buying the rumor, much as I would buy the device if it actually existed. Copyright © 2008 Adam C. Engst. TidBITS is copyright © 2008 TidBITS Publishing Inc. Apple's new iPod chief ordered to stop working
Filed under: Misc. Gadgets Apple's poaching of Mark Papermaster from IBM to run the iPod division is getting more dramatic by the day -- the court on Friday ordered him to stop working at Apple while it sorts IBM's lawsuit against his hiring. For his part, Papermaster (seriously, what a great name) says he left IBM with good intentions and that he kept his old company fully aware of what was going on before he was hired -- a statement supported by the fact that IBM let him keep working for two weeks after he accepted the Apple gig instead of escorting him out of the building. We'll see how this plays out -- although Steve personally handcrafts every iPod out of a kitten, he does lean on his exec staff to keep the Benz washed and waxed. Apple files patent for iPod background display
Apple has developed a technology that would let iPhones and iPods display basic warnings to users without invoking the full screen, a new US patent filing shows. The system would use a second, always-on but power-efficient backlight to illuminate a custom-shaped notification when the main backlight isn't switched on, such as an indication that an iPod is stopped or an SMS text message has reached...
