Canon, on October 28, debuted eight new digital cameras, ranging from high end to entry level, for launch in the Taiwan market. Cannon is aiming at a total market share of 20% this year, according to Canon Marketing (Taiwan).
Kodak says Samsung and LG cameraphones infringe its digital camera patents
Eastman Kodak announced that it has filed complaints against Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics and other related entities for infringement of Kodak patents. The Kodak actions specifically allege that Samsung and LG camera phones infringe Kodak digital camera patents. The patents in question cover technology related to image capture, compression and data storage and a method for previewing motion images.

Like just about everyone else, we miss the Polaroid film format; maybe it's just nostalgia, but we enjoyed having something we could hold on to (and shake) after taking a picture. Polaroids may be dead, but the basic concept lives on -- remember Zink, that company whose technology prints digital photos on the spot without ink? It's joined forces with toy-maker Tomy to make the xiao TIP-521, a digital camera with a printer built in. The xiao has a modest five megapixel resolution, so we might wait and see how Polaroid's own Zink camera turns out, but in either case we're stoked the tactile experience is back.[Via Market Watch]

Mamiya's DL28 digital camera system is slightly cheaper than you'd think

You might have to think about dropping as much as $30,000 one of these babies if you're the discerning type, but Mamiya is trying to convince you that you can save a few thousand dollars and still get results. Enter the DL28 digital camera system, which combines the body of the well-established 645 with Leaf's Aptus-II 6 digital back. It's got 16-bit capture, a 12-stop dynamic range, an ISO range of 50 - 800, and a fancy 3.5-inch touch screen at price of $15,000, appropriate for cash-strapped professionals and financially comfortable hobbyists -- unless Nikon has something to say about it. Okay, we don't know who came up with this idea, but we have to give them some credit for innovation, not to mention (in our opinion) some pretty attractive design sense. Yes, Target's new gift card gimmick this holiday season is that it doubles as a cute, disposable digital camera. The little device runs on two AAA batteries, has a self-timer, and is packaged with a USB cord, driver disc, instruction manual and a voucher for 40 free prints from Target. The camera itself is a 1.2-megapixel affair with 8MB of memory on-board, which means it can store about 50 images. Now, we know this just a ploy to get us to buy Target gift cards, but we're kind of smitten with this little thing. Oh, and: Bah! A Sanyo acquisition for Panasonic would not significantly impact Taiwan-based...
While media reports are indicating that Panasonic will acquire Sanyo's digital camera business operation, sources in Taiwan's digital camera industry noted that any deal would not have too much of a negative impact on Foxconn, Altek, Ability Enterprise and Asia Optical, the top four Taiwan-based ODM/OEM makers of digital cameras.

Taiwan market: Casio aims at 10% share of digital camera market in 2008
Casio on October 23 unveiled two new digital camera models, Exilim FH20 and Exilim Z300, for launch soon in the Taiwan market at a recommended retail prices of NT$22,000 (US$670) and NT$10,990 respectively. The company aims to take 10% of the total sales volume of digital cameras in Taiwan in 2008, according to Casio Taiwan.
Kodak sues LG, Samsung over digital camera patents
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Eastman Kodak Company said late Monday it is suing Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, alleging infringment of its digital camera patents. Kodak filed the suit with the U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York and the International Trade Commission. Canon Powershot E1 reviewed: a little style, not so much substance

The Canon PowerShot E1 -- an entry-level 10 megapixel digital camera we saw a while back -- variously described as being aimed at "women" and "on-the-go, fashion-conscious teens perfect for capturing every OMG moment" has gotten itself a review over at Photography Blog, and well, it's not exactly anything to "OMG" about. This addition to the PowerShot clan gets a few points for its retro stylings, but the build makes it feel even more like a cheap toy than other plastic models. As for image quality, the E1 predictably packs too many pixels for its sensor, resulting in photos with good resolution, but noise and smearing in anything with fine details. It does, however, get better then expected marks on video quality. Essentially, the PowerShot E1 is called out for being a pricier, updated design of the PowerShot A580, with improved macro and video modes, plus the addition of infinity focus. While the reviewer seems wary of recommending the camera to any adult, they are willing to concede that the it "could still make a good first camera for a child." Wow, burn. Canon announces XH A1S and XH G1S prosumer HD camcorders

Just in case the XL H1S and XL H1A weren't really your style, Canon's hoping to snag a fair chunk of your short-term savings with a new duo of prosumer HD camcorders. The HDV XH A1S and XH G1S both feature a 20x HD video lens, manual zoom / focus, three independent manual adjustment rings, an "unprecedented" range of image / color settings, 60i / 30F / 24F frame rate options, Instant AF focusing system, the DIGIC DV II proprietary digital signal processor, two built-in XLR terminals with separate audio-input sensitivity settings, line output level switching and support for optional HDD recording in the field. The XH G1S adds in HD-SDI / SD-SDI output, SMPTE timecode input / output, and genlock input, which are all features that probably won't be missed by greenies baffled by the mere mention of those inclusions.
