Recalled: 35,000 volatile Sony batteries in Dell / HP / Toshiba laptops
Filed under: Laptops, PeripheralsRuh roh. We're really, really hoping this isn't just the first of another long string of laptop battery recalls, but the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with a slew of other outfits, has just announced a voluntary recall of around 35,000 Sony laptop batteries. As you'd expect, the Li-ions in question "can overheat, posing a fire and burn hazard to consumers," and there have already been 19 reports of overheating including 17 reports of flames / fire and two reports of consumers getting mildly burnt. For the full list (and it's pretty long) of affected laptop models from HP / HP Compaq, Toshiba and Dell, be sure to give the read link some serious attention. Oh, and stop using that battery pronto if yours is one of the afflicted.Recalled: 35,000 volatile Sony batteries in Dell / HP / Toshiba laptops originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 30 Oct 2008 17:25:00 EST. Dell taking Art House laptops made-to-order in 2009
Filed under: Laptops
Dell's been taking its design new directions for a while now, but it looks the company's war on boring is about to get personal. Ed Boyd, Dell's new Industrial Design Director, told BusinessWeek that Dell also plans on launching customizable computers with "scores of colors, patterns, and textures," and options that will "go far beyond the handful of choices available" from most rivals. We assume he just means the exterior, though that's unclear, so we'll keep our fingers crossed for that hot pink keyboard. There are also no details yet on which models will be up for customization or their pricing, but the other Art House models range from $649 to $800, so our uncle probably won't have to break the bank to unveil his edgy laptop graffiti when these hit sometime next year. Can't hardly wait.

Dell scraps plans for new MP3 player in a fit of sanity?
Filed under: Portable Audio, Portable Video
The oh so humble, Mr. Person Familiar with the Matter is back with knowledge that Dell has postponed its Zing-based MP3 player... indefinitely. This, according to the Wall Street Journal -- the very source of the original DJ Ditty rebirthing rumor. Dell will shelve the MP3 prototypes it was preparing for a possible fall launch and focus instead on building out its Zing software to organize the music and movies downloaded to Dell PCs. So no DJ Ditty 2, imagine our sense of loss. A spokesman did say that Dell plans to launch another "half-dozen laptops and desktops between now and the end of the calendar year." Would that list include the Studio XPS 13 and 16 by any chance Dell? Dell Inspiron Mini 12 Notebook Takes Advantage of Intel's Atom Processor
The Dell Inspiron Mini 12 is a notebook that looks to bridge the gap between low-cost laptops like the Asus Eee PC and full-size notebooks with larger screens. Dell also took an unusual step and used an Intel Atom processor with the Inspiron Mini 12 notebook that was originally designed for a new class of mobile Internet devices, or MIDs. While available only in Japan now, the Dell Inspiron Mini 12 will hit U.S. retail shelves in November. -

Dell's Studio 15 and 17 get art-housed for (PRODUCT) RED
Filed under: Laptops
Dell is set to expand upon its Art House series of Studio laptops with three new special edition designs for (PRODUCT) RED. That's right: now you can have an arty Dell and do some good at the same time, with the choice of three different artists: Joseph Amedokpo, Siobhan Gunning and Bruce Mau. The custom designs will be available on Dell's Studio 15 and 17 models for $649 and $799 respectively, and a $20 contribution will be made to The Global Fund for AIDS programs in Africa for each one sold. Dell claims that the art is "permanently infused" on the casing and totally durable, so, just like when deciding on a tattoo, be sure you're really committed before the purchase. And if you're too cool for these designs, well, maybe your slightly hip, gaudy great aunt will be interested. Regardless, they're available now online.Dell's Studio 15 and 17 get art-housed for (PRODUCT) RED originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 11 Nov 2008 15:14:00 EST. Dell Looks to the Ultraportable Market with the Inspiron Mini 12
Dell is looking to offer consumers a new type of ultraportable notebook with the Inspiron Mini 12. While the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 uses Intel's Atom processors, Dell included a 12.1-inch display and other features, such as an 80GB hard disk drive, that offer a more robust laptop configuration compared with other so-called netbooks that companies such as Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo and Acer have been bringing into the market since the start of 2008. The Dell Inspiron Mini 12 does come at a higher price. When the notebook comes to U.S. retailers in November, the Mini 12 will cost about $600. - ...
Dell launches the Inspiron Mini 12
We knew more Inspiron Minis were in the works, and Dell's just officially announced the next member of the family, the Inspiron Mini 12. Yep, the same machine we first spotted all the way back in June, and nothing much has changed in the meantime -- you're looking at either a 1.3GHz Atom Z520 or 1.6GHz Atom Z530 processor (a step up from the usual 1.6GHz Atom N270), up to an 80GB drive, 1GB of RAM, Bluetooth / WiFi, and that 12-inch, 1280 x 800 display, all in a 2.72-pound package less than one inch thick. The bad news? It's Japan-only for now, but it'll hit the States late next month with a starting price under $600. That's a pretty hot price / performance ratio on paper -- if this thing performs like it should, it could potentially take away sales from more full-featured ultraportables like the Envy 133 and the MacBook Air. We'll see how it goes -- the netbook market suddenly got interesting again, eh? Read - Dell announcement Read - Laptop hands-on Read - Dell Q+APermalink | Email this | Comments
