Kodak says Samsung and LG cameraphones infringe its digital camera patents
Eastman Kodak announced that it has filed complaints against Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics and other related entities for infringement of Kodak patents. The Kodak actions specifically allege that Samsung and LG camera phones infringe Kodak digital camera patents. The patents in question cover technology related to image capture, compression and data storage and a method for previewing motion images.

Like just about everyone else, we miss the Polaroid film format; maybe it's just nostalgia, but we enjoyed having something we could hold on to (and shake) after taking a picture. Polaroids may be dead, but the basic concept lives on -- remember Zink, that company whose technology prints digital photos on the spot without ink? It's joined forces with toy-maker Tomy to make the xiao TIP-521, a digital camera with a printer built in. The xiao has a modest five megapixel resolution, so we might wait and see how Polaroid's own Zink camera turns out, but in either case we're stoked the tactile experience is back.[Via Market Watch]

Mamiya's DL28 digital camera system is slightly cheaper than you'd think

Enter the DL28 digital camera system, which combines the body of the well-established 645 with Leaf's Aptus-II 6 digital back. It's got 16-bit capture, a 12-stop dynamic range, an ISO range of 50 - 800, and a fancy 3.5-inch touch screen at price of $15,000, appropriate for cash-strapped professionals and financially comfortable hobbyists -- unless Nikon has something to say about it. Okay, we don't know who came up with this idea, but we have to give them some credit for innovation, not to mention (in our opinion) some pretty attractive design sense. Yes, Target's new gift card gimmick this holiday season is that it doubles as a cute, disposable digital camera. The little device runs on two AAA batteries, has a self-timer, and is packaged with a USB cord, driver disc, instruction manual and a voucher for 40 free prints from Target. The camera itself is a 1.2-megapixel affair with 8MB of memory on-board, which means it can store about 50 images. Now, we know this just a ploy to get us to buy Target gift cards, but we're kind of smitten with this little thing. Oh, and: Bah! A Sanyo acquisition for Panasonic would not significantly impact Taiwan-based...
While media reports are indicating that Panasonic will acquire Sanyo's digital camera business operation, sources in Taiwan's digital camera industry noted that any deal would not have too much of a negative impact on Foxconn, Altek, Ability Enterprise and Asia Optical, the top four Taiwan-based ODM/OEM makers of digital cameras.

Casio on October 23 unveiled two new digital camera models, Exilim FH20 and Exilim Z300, for launch soon in the Taiwan market at a recommended retail prices of NT$22,000 (US$670) and NT$10,990 respectively. The company aims to take 10% of the total sales volume of digital cameras in Taiwan in 2008, according to Casio Taiwan.

Matrox Iris GT smart camera brings Windows CE to Atom-land

Matrox's new Iris GT "smart camera" doesn't mark the first time that the Atom processor and Windows CE have run into each other, but it's certainly one of the most interesting encounters, even if it's one that most folks likely won't see first hand. Apparently, the camera is intended to be used in various "machine vision" applications, like locating and reading barcodes or measuring the geometry of 2D objects, but we think you'll agree that it has one other, not quite official use written all over it: robot eye. The camera's specs certainly seem to make that a possibility, and include that ever-present 1.6GHz Atom processor, 256MB of RAM, 1GB of flash storage, a gigabit Ethernet port, and USB 2.0 and RS232 ports, not to mention accommodations for a number of interchangeable lenses -- it's even dust-proof and "washable." No word on a price just yet, but Matrox says it'll be available sometime in the first quarter of next year.[Via jkOnTheRun]

Olympus fills the E-520/E-3 gap with the E-30 DSLR

If you're looking for an Olympus DSLR but don't have the bank for a $1,499 E-3, yet couldn't be seen with a pedestrian $599 E-520, Olympus is about to fill your niche with the upcoming $1,299 E-30, a shooter that sits neatly betwixt the two in most stats despite actually having a higher megapixel sensor than either. (We all know that doesn't necessarily mean more quality, right?) Like its higher and lower cousins it too offers in-body image stabilization and Live View, borrowing the 2.7-inch LCD from the E-520 while snagging the 11-point auto-focus function from the E-3. It also nets a built-in level that displays roll and pitch, plus an integrated wireless flash receiver, making it sound very much like a prosumer model -- though it has enough consumery shooting modes like "Grainy Film" and "Pop Art" to make any would-be-photog cringe. Best of both worlds or unwanted offspring? Taiwan digital camcorder maker Aiptek to spin off ODM/OEM business
Taiwan-based digital video camcorder (DVs) and digital camera maker Aiptek International will spin off its ODM/OEM manufacturing business as a wholly owned subsidiary (not yet named in English) in order to focus operations on own-brand marketing, according to a company filing with the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TSE) on November 10.
