Opening the Gaming Gadget
When you think about portable gaming gadgets, it's hard to rattle off a hefty list of possibilities. They mostly follow a path of heavy marketing -- the Nintendo DS and the PlayStation Portable are heavily advertised, and their sales are strong. But some hardcore gamers have become attracted to devices exclusively designed and
marketed for homebrew or do-it-yourself applications.

Sony has informally announced its PlayStation Portable handheld console will be receiving another firmware upgrade. Conspicuously, the announcement came on the same day as news that the "unhackable" PSP 3000 had been hacked.
New SNES portable is heavy on the SNES, light on the portable
Filed under: Gaming
The SNES has certainly proven to be one of the most popular consoles to get the portable treatment among those go-getter console modders out there, and it looks like it's not showing any signs of losing that status, with this so-called SNEP (Super Nintendo Entertainment Portable) only the latest to pop up on our radar. As you can see above, this one is a tad less portable than some other handheld SNES mods we've seen (it also apparently needs to be plugged in), but it does at least do better job than most at staying true to the SNES's (or, more accurately, the Super Famicom's) instantly-recognizable appearance. There's no plans available for building your own, unfortunately, but you can check it out in action in the video after the break.[Via Nintendo Wii Fanboy]

Hammer introduces skinnable morespace Portable hard drive
Filed under: Storage
Make no mistake, it's been a hot minute since we've heard a good word from Hammer Storage, but the outfit is back and better than ever with an all new pocket-friendly hard drive. The morespace Portable weighs in at less than 5-ounces and houses a 2.5-inch HDD with capacities ranging from 160GB to 750GB. The USB 2.0 device can also be customized with your own protective skin, giving data thieves one less reason to pick off your drive versus one that's not plastered with your ex-girlfriends face. Pricing is available "upon request," and just so you know, the 160GB - 500GB units are available now, but the 750 gigger won't be around 'til January of next year. Full release is after the break.Continue reading Hammer introduces skinnable morespace Portable hard drivePermalink | Email this | Comments

PlayStation Home hacked, the search for backup exploits begins
Filed under: Gaming
Hackers, like life, will find a way. Sony knows that all too well thanks to the PSP, but so far the PlayStation 3 has stood strong in the face of legions of nerds trying to find a way to exploit it. A potentially major breakthrough may have been made, though, as well-known PS3 hacker StreetskaterFU (we've no idea what he's going for with that name -- really) has managed to decrypt the beta client for Sony's PlayStation Home service. Curious devs can now poke around in the files looking for a way to exploit the newish in-game XMB functionality, potentially allowing homebrew apps and game backups without hard drive swapping. There's no guarantee it will lead anywhere in the end, but you don't care either way, right? Our upstanding readership would never participate in such heinously illegal activities.[Thanks, James]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Report: PlayStation 2 Relaxes Content Approval For Emerging Markets
According to new media reports, Sony says it will no longer insist on content approval for PlayStation 2 titles, in a similar way to the DS and Wii's lack of detailed concept approval, making it easier to create titles for the console.
