Recalled: 35,000 volatile Sony batteries in Dell / HP / Toshiba laptops
Filed under: Laptops, PeripheralsRuh roh. We're really, really hoping this isn't just the first of another long string of laptop battery recalls, but the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with a slew of other outfits, has just announced a voluntary recall of around 35,000 Sony laptop batteries. As you'd expect, the Li-ions in question "can overheat, posing a fire and burn hazard to consumers," and there have already been 19 reports of overheating including 17 reports of flames / fire and two reports of consumers getting mildly burnt. For the full list (and it's pretty long) of affected laptop models from HP / HP Compaq, Toshiba and Dell, be sure to give the read link some serious attention. Oh, and stop using that battery pronto if yours is one of the afflicted.Recalled: 35,000 volatile Sony batteries in Dell / HP / Toshiba laptops originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 30 Oct 2008 17:25:00 EST. Toshiba gets serious with $4k Qosmio X305-Q708 gaming laptop
Filed under: Laptops Look out, Alienware / Voodoo -- a formidable opponent just rolled in, and it appears that some prankster stuck a Toshiba logo on whatever machine is hiding underneath. All jesting aside, Tosh is revamping its -- shall we say, vivid -- Qosmio X305 by introducing the Qosmio X305-Q708, which houses a potent Core 2 Extreme QX9300 CPU, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, a 128GB SSD, 320GB 7,200 RPM SATA drive, dual-layer DVD writer, twin NVIDIA 512MB GeForce 9800M GTS graphics cards, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and Windows Vista Ultimate. You'll also find a full-sized keyboard with a ten-key number pad, four Harman Kardon speakers, HDMI / DisplayPort connectors, 1.3-megapixel webcam, Wireless USB / USB Sleep-and-Charge technologies and a 17-inch TruBrite LCD (though resolution remains a mystery). It should be available any moment for around $4,199.99, but we'd factor in a few extra hundies to have Colorware blot out the putrid "fiery Fusion" finish (seen better after the break).Continue reading Toshiba gets serious with $4k Qosmio X305-Q708 gaming laptopRead | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Toshiba's 500GB laptop drive is ready for the Christmas ball
Oh hey, welcome to 500GB laptop drive announcement party Toshiba. Shame you had to come dressed in the same 9.5-mm slab, 2.5-inch 3Gbps SATA interface, 1.4 watt idle power draw, 5,400rpm spin, and 25dB hum as everyone else in the room. Pretty, but still embarrassing. No full-disk, hardware encryption but at least you can take comfort at besting some (but not all) of your competition by actually shipping your drive in December.[Via Impress]Filed under: StorageToshiba's 500GB laptop drive is ready for the Christmas ball originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 19 Nov 2008 02:09:00 EST. Toshiba, Viewsonic launch new widescreen projectors
Filed under: Displays Those in the market for a business / education-minded projector certainly aren't hurting for options these days, but if you somehow still haven't found one to your liking, you may want to consider one of these new models from Toshiba and Viewsonic. At about four pounds apiece, they're reasonably portable, and pack the same WXGA resolution along with some other similar specs across the board, including a 600:1 contrast ratio and 2,220 ANSI lumens on the Toshiba TLP-WX1000U, and a 500:1 contrast ratio and 2,000 lumens on the Viewsonic PJ359w. The Viewsonic also adds HDMI 1.3 connectivity to the mix, not to mention a short-throw lens, though you'll have to decide for yourself if that's worth the higher $1,299 list price or not, compared to just $959 for the Toshiba.Read - Toshiba TLP-WX1000URead - Viewsonic PJ359w Toshiba, Viewsonic launch new widescreen projectors originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 11 Nov 2008 15:46:00 EST. Samsung's Q310-34P laptop reviewed: not bad for a first try
Filed under: Laptops Okay, so maybe Samsung isn't entirely new to the laptop game here in the USA, but for its first line of self-branded lappies, the Q310 ultraportable didn't fare half bad in its first review. Critics over at Laptop Mag found the design of the 13.3-incher to be "handsome," the performance "smooth" and the endurance to be satisfactory enough. It also pointed out that the glossy display wasn't incredibly distracting as with other machines we've personally reviewed, and while they had a tough time finding anything major to harsh on, they couldn't help but point out that the $949 ThinkPad SL300 was likely a better value. 'Course, if money ain't a thang, you're probably safe to make a purchase here.Samsung's Q310-34P laptop reviewed: not bad for a first try originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 16 Nov 2008 21:07:00 EST. Samsung's X460 laptop gets fondled on video
Filed under: Laptops The lucky, lucky chaps over at Laptop got an early sit-down with the glossy 14.1-inch Samsung X460 we've been hearing so much about. We'll have to be patient and wait for the full review, but some early impressions are that the outer shell smudges up quite easily (as evidenced by the above photo), it's got a pretty fast boot-time and that the display is very, very bright. Check out the deeply riveting video of the handling after the break.Continue reading Samsung's X460 laptop gets fondled on videoSamsung's X460 laptop gets fondled on video originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 11 Nov 2008 08:27:00 EST. Toshiba Portege A605: just like the R500, only different (and heavier)
Filed under: Laptops Just when you thought you were safe from the overwhelming spate of laptops we saw last week, Toshiba strikes again with the Portege A605. This notebook is based on the R500, but where the R500 measures .77-inches thick and weighs in at 2.4 pounds, the A605 is a relative behemoth at 1.18-inches thick and over 3 pounds. And unlike the R500 series, there are no SSD options available. Other than that, you get just what you'd expect: a 12.1-inch LED backlit screen, Core 2 Duo processor, 3GB of RAM, 250GB SATA hard drive, DVD burner, and the promise of almost seven hours of battery life. Prices start at $1,399, hit the read link for more info. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

The 43 nanometer process allows Toshiba to deliver double the density of its previous 56nm process, while also delivering SLC speeds, which are approximately 2.5x faster than the more common, denser but historically slower MLC (Mu...
